about

DO AND MAKE DONE
Time breathes. In and out. It inflates, or it makes itself narrow and empty, alternately, with different intensity or at the same time in different places. Sometimes time even holds its breath. Everyone knows that, but nobody really likes to believe it. Time just goes by without our doing anything, is what our everyday consciousness thinks. There is nothing wrong with that. The time is ticking away and starts all over again after 24 hours.

But how time flies and what it does to us are the more interesting questions. Apart from the fact that our everyday consciousness, which likes to think linearly, could slowly accept that space-time has existed since Einstein, that everything runs in curved paths and not infinitely straight. But it's really very difficult to understand.

Improvising musicians know more about time and their breath, even if their knowledge is intuitive. Improvising musicians don't just play as it happens and then see what happens from inhaling and exhaling and from the many constellations...
Improvising musicians deal thoroughly with that order of the world that in between or sometimes also from a temporary overcoming of this necessary rhythm, which one can nevertheless never completely forget. Improvising musicians can only start playing when they have found the right tone and a stable attitude towards the passage of time.

Those who do not improvise alone have to find an attitude that they share with the other improvising musicians. Improvisation consists only partly of activity, of playing and doing, searching and finding, breaking up and breaking off, continuing and ending. Another aspect of improvising is letting it happen. Listening, listening, falling silent, stepping back, waiting. There is no hunter fence between the two working methods, both merge or happen at the same time. The best thing that can come about in an improvisation is a balance between letting it happen and actively influencing it. A state of limbo in which you obey the breath of time and bring your own into harmony with it. Only then is improvised music created that not only makes you sit up and take notice, but can also be experienced. That might sound a bit mystifying, but it isn't: you can hear it.
Eric Plandé and Barre Phillips, who belong to two different generations of musicians, improvise freely and together, and they have given the result the daring title 'Breath of Time'. It's kind of a headline....
